Superbites vying for Fish and Chip Shop of the Year award

Local takeaway Superbites is one of six finalists in the north who are vying for the coveted title of Fish and Chip Shop of the Year at the prestigious national awards.

Having been named among the top 60 fish and chip shops in the UK, the hugely popular Crossmaglen restaurant, joins Silverfin Traditional Fish & Chips in Newry, Chaska in Enniskillen, Fish City in Belfast, The Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon and The Friary in Carrickfergus in the battle for the top accolade in the 2018 awards.

Superbites is certainly no stranger to accolades, with a string of prestigious titles under its belt. Last year, Superbites joined the Fish and Chip Shop elite from across the UK, when it was announced as the top Fish and Chip Shop out of counties Antrim, Down and Armagh, as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.  The coveted achievement propelled the local takeaway to one of the top two best fish and chip shops in Northern Ireland and one of the top 21 in the UK.

The local restaurant, with its hot and cold deli counters, takeaway and catering service, has long been a favourite among local people and proprietor Gerard McMonagle has always extended his thanks to his dedicated staff and to his loyal customer base and local community for their support over the years.

Along with the other 5 Northern Ireland shops, Superbites has been put through its paces for this year’s competition, being judged on their frying skills, menu development and innovation, sustainable sourcing policies, staff training processes and marketing techniques, in their aim to make it into the top 20 over the coming weeks.

The Northern Ireland entrants will then be whittled down to the top 10, before the final judging process due to take place in London in January.

Commenting on the prestigious awards, Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive of organisers Seafish, said,

“This award showcases the best of the best, the local fish and chip shops that we all love to eat from. The calibre of shops in this year’s top 60 is outstanding – they are a true representation of our industry and sum up perfectly why British fish and chips are, and will always be, the best in the world. With 60 shortlisted shops to choose from, why not take a trip to your nearest contender and see how you rate it?”

The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 30th anniversary awards ceremony will take place in London on January 25.  The Examiner wishes Superbites the very best of luck in the competition for the coveted title.
