Talented Silverbridge teenager signs for premiership club Everton

A successful career as a professional soccer player is beckoning for Silverbridge teenager, Barney McKeown (pictured) after he signed for English premiership club Everton FC last weekend.

An Under 16 player with Portadown FC, Barney signed his two-year scholarship forms just days after his 16th birthday.  Having spent the past three years travelling over and back to the Merseyside club, as well as making European trips with its Academy Team, the talented footballer’s efforts and skills have been rewarded and he is one of just 14 youths to be offered a scholarship with the Premier League club.

Barney spent his early years playing with Camlough Rovers FC, before joining Portadown FC as a 12-year-old where his skillful performances soon caught the eye of several clubs across the water.  Impressed with his footballing abilities, he was soon invited to join the Everton FC youth academy and began making the journey across for training several times a month.

Barney is also a gifted Gaelic footballer, having played underage for his club Silverbridge Harps, he was a key player in the club’s All-Ireland Féile win two years ago.

He is wished every success as he embarks on this exciting journey and we look forward to following his progress as he carves his niche in the world of professional soccer.
