Tributes paid to Newry man killed in Qatar accident
St. John Bosco GFC has led tributes to a young Newry man killed in a tragic accident in Qatar on Saturday. Popular GAA player Eamon Morgan was killed along with his English girlfriend Charlotte Madden in what is believed to have been a freak beach buggy accident. Two other people were injured in the incident and are being treated in a Qatar hospital.
As news broke of the double tragedy, St. John Bosco GFC expressed their condolences to both the Morgan and Madden families in a message posted on the club’s Facebook page on Sunday.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to the Morgan and Madden families, to their friends and to Eamon’s Bosco teammates on the tragic news which we received last night,” the post read.
An outpouring of tributes were soon paid to the “wonderful couple”‘ with Eamon described as a “true wee gent.” His family, local midwife Maura Morgan, father Kevin and his brothers were also remembered in the thoughts and prayers of the entire community.
Both Eamon and his girlfriend were also members of the Qatar GAA club. A statement released by the club read,
“It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of two of our members, two of our friends, two of our family.”
“Eamonn and Charlotte will be sorely missed, people often don’t realise at home how much of a community can be built away from home, but I can tell you, sincerely, that Eamonn and Charlotte were very much central to the community that is Qatar GAA, and it will be hard to imagine it without them. They will remain forever in our hearts and we are thinking of their family and friends back home.”
Qatar GAA will hold a Mass tomorrow and have encouraged its members to wear the club colours while they also wished a speedy recovery to the two people recovering.
Speaking to The Examiner about the tragedy, Newry Independent Councillor, Kevin McAteer, who is friend of the Morgan family, said,
“I know the Morgan family very well and I have some fond memories of Eamon, but let’s not forget about the family of Charlotte Madden who has also passed away.
“They were so young and full of life and my thoughts and prayers are with both families at this sad time.
“Heaven has gained two angels. May they rest in peace.”
