Two Newry men charged with Banbridge car hijacking
Two Newry men have appeared in court charged in relation to a hijacking incident in Banbridge where a woman was dragged from her car.
Thirty-three year old Stephen McGrath of Ardcarn Park and 26 year old Dominic McGrath of Iveagh Crescent in the city are charged with the hijacking, as well as aggravated vehicle taking causing damage to two other cars, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, dangerous driving and assaulting police.
The shocking hijacking took place shortly after 6pm on January 24th when two men were reported to have dragged a woman from her silver Toyota Corolla before rampaging through Banbridge in the vehicle, crashing into a pregnant woman before coming to an abrupt halt on the Newry Road after smashing into a roundabout.
Members of the public restrained the two men at the scene until police arrived.
Both men are also accused of stealing a charity box belonging to Alzheimer’s NI from a location in Banbridge prior to the motoring offences.
A PSNI officer dealing with the case confirmed to the court that all charges could be connected to both defendants.
Both men were remanded in custody to appear by video-link at Banbridge Magistrates’ Court next month.
