Una Quinn is European Champion

Úna Quinn representing Team Torres, Newry has won the Gold Medal at the international Brazilian Jiu Jitsu federation European Championships which were held at the Gymnasium Pavilhão Multiusos de Odivelas, Lisbon, Portugal.

Úna, who has been described as “A Beast on the Mats and a Lady off the Mats,” proved just that as she was totally dominant in all of her four fights which were won without dropping a single point.

Trained in Newry by Sebastiao Torres who is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo Black Belt, Úna was fighting fit and in peak condition thanks to the efforts of Sebastiao going into the games, which had attracted record entries of 3,500 in the various class events which took place over the 4 days of competition.

First up for Úna was English opponent Natalie Nicholson (Roger Gracie) who was defeated 9-0. Isobella Aerny (Nova Uniao) of Switzerland was dismissed 10-0 in the quarter final leaving German Bianca Siegemund (Wolfgang Heidel Academy) between Úna and a place in the final. It was a case of seventh heaven for the Lurgencullenboy native as she beat her semi-final opponent 7-0 to reach the final.

Standing in the way of dream European Gold medal for Úna was Spanish girl Marta Mayoral Sanchez who was equally as impressive as her opponent in reaching the final. Showing that her all round ability and technique were in top shape Úna struck gold in spectacular fashion with a classic Armbar Submission.

Husband Karl, son Aodhan and her mum and dad Clare & Pat were justifiably proud onlookers as Úna took her place on the podium to receive her Gold medal.
