Veteran Hospice volunteer rewarded for long service
A Newry woman who has devoted more than 25 years actively fundraising for Southern Area Hospice Services has been recognized and rewarded for her prolonged voluntary service.
Deborah Kennedy was crowned ‘Long Service Fundraising Volunteer’ at the annual Institute of Fundraising Awards ceremony, held in Riddel Hall, Belfast recently.
The awards celebrate excellence in fundraising by potential fundraisers and organisations.
Soon after the Southern Area Hospice Services was founded in 1989, Deborah was among a host of supporters and volunteers who rallied to help raise money and fund the Hospice. She set about organizing a sponsored walk in Newry with the aim of raising both money and public awareness of this new service available to patients suffering from cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, and their families.
Fast forward to 2016 and Deborah has just completed her 25th year as a Hospice fundraising volunteer, while her sponsored walk has become a hugely successful annual event, raising more than £350,000.
The Southern Area Hospice Services expressed delight that Deborah’s fundraising achievements have been recognized with this award, adding that she is “an excellent example of the outstanding contributions given by volunteers” and is a worthy winner of this title.
Speaking of the award, Siobhan McArdle, Assistant Fundraising Manager said “I have had the pleasure of working with Deborah for over 20 years and she is a phenomenal lady who has and continues to do so much for Southern Area Hospice. I congratulate Deborah as a very worthy winner for this prestigious award and thank her for her contributions over the past 25 years.”
The awards reflect the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland’s commitment to champion best practice and acknowledge innovation, creativity in fundraising and the impact of successful partnerships and events. Southern Area Hospice Services are delighted to be acknowledged at this prestigious event and congratulate Deborah on her success.
