Weapons haul linked to dissident republican activity
A ‘substantial’ quantity of ammunition and a mortar tube uncovered in a search by Gardaí near Omeath are being linked to dissident republican activity.
The find was made on Friday morning in a wooded area close to the border. The ammunition of varied calibre – believed to be in the region of one thousand rounds – along with the mortar tube, which is pending examination by ballistics experts, were recovered during the planned operation. The scene was sealed off as Garda forensic units removed the items for further examination.
The search operation, led by Garda Special Detective and Emergency Response Units, resumed on Saturday but nothing further was found and it concluded later that evening.
Gardaí said the operation was part of an ongoing investigation targeting the activities of dissident republican groups. No arrests were made.
